Our Local Business Mentors SPARC Your Professional Development

Meet Your Host: Jennie Sparks

Jennie is the founder of SPARC, a supportive space where anyone between the ages of 21-40 can come to help advance their career.

Whether you work for a small business or a large company, own your own business or are looking to start a business, or if you are looking to get promoted, SPARC can help you reach your career goals while also helping you build your social connections with other like-minded young professionals. If you've lived in Nevada County your whole life, are new to the area, or are moving back after some time away, SPARC can help you meet new people, build strong business relationships, and gain new skills.

Our monthly meet-ups provide networking opportunities in a no-pressure environment, and also feature a Mentor Moment where a mentor offers advice to help motivate you in your career. Mentors will cover topics including how to get hired, how to get promoted, how to use your connections to advance your career, how to get unstuck at your job, how to step into the role of a manager, and much more.

Meet-ups are held at a different business each month, giving you a chance to look behind the scenes at the inner workings of that business. Every month we will hear a brief, but dynamic overview from the business owner about how they got started, what it took to get where they are today, and what they learned along the way.

"How to get the insights from quickbooks that grow your bottom line"
Presenter: Ean Price Murphy
Money scares many people. But it doesn’t scare Ean. She doesn’t want you to have to worry about your “crazy” finances anymore! If you are nervous or confused about money, she helps you become confident, comfortable and knowledgeable around money.

She wasn’t born a bookkeeper. She learned it slowly. In fact, she graduated with a Liberal Arts degree, so it wasn’t until her 20s that she started becoming educated about money. After all, it’s just another language, and with a little guidance, you’ll be fluent, too.

So if you’re overwhelmed or even embarrassed by where you’re at—fear not! She wants your business to be successful, and will do everything in her power to make it so using her experience as a bookkeeper, business coach, and fellow small-business owner.

"Bullet-proofing your tax audit"
Presenter: Deb Patterson
Born in San Francisco and raised on the peninsula, Deb’s 1st career out of school was in government security. She climbed the corporate ladder to the uppermost rungs within her department when she was asked to manage the entire Corporate Security Program including the “Vaulted” area and learning how to armour limosines.

Next, Deb went back to school to finish a degree in Finance and took a job with Syntex Pharmaceuticals in Palo Alto. Again, she went from Administrative Assistant to the Finance Director to Financial Analyst in the Treasury Department. She left after 5 years, traveled, and then went into Real Estate sales for Grubb and Ellis in Los Altos for 5 years.

Deb finally fell into taxes as a part time job when she had her one and only child in January, 1998. She went to H&R Block Tax School and started work in January, 1999. Deb has stayed in taxes ever since working for H&R while getting her Enrolled Agent Certification (EA) from the IRS, she then moved on to a Denver CPA firm (boring again), and a high end tax boutique in Cherry Creek Denver preparing taxes for everyone from hookers to Broncos.

In 2016, Deb “hung her shingle” at a cottage on Colfax Avenue where she had a tax office in the front half and in 2018, she moved her tax office 2 doors down the street to 312 Colfax Avenue where she now has a practice offering not only tax preparation, but IRS Resolution services as well.

She has the help of an administrative assistant, another EA, and a CTEC (California Certified). In the 2.5 years her shingle has been swinging, her business has grown from 60 returns the first season, approximately 120 returns the second season, and over 250 so far this calendar year, not to mention exponential growth in the Tax Resolution business.
